Puppies are not just for Christmas. How can I set myself and my new furry family member up for success?
Bringing home a puppy over the festive season is incredibly exciting. Planning ahead helps ensure your new companion has the happiest start to life, with confidence and good health.
A Strong Start for a Happy Future for Your New Puppy
Early care shapes how puppies grow, learn and feel in their new world. Key steps include:
Vaccinations
Parasite protection
Microchipping
Good nutrition.
Positive socialisation
Gentle training to help them grow into friendly, relaxed adults
Health Essentials for Puppies
It’s always advisable to pre-register with a vet before you purchase your puppy. When you book your first vet appointment, you can make informed decisions on the following:
Vaccinations
Protect against serious infectious diseases.
The first and second course of vaccinations are given 2-4 weeks apart
The first set of vaccines are usually administered with the breeders.
You will then be responsible for the second and future (yearly) vaccines.
Contact your vet before your first visit so they can ensure they have the correct vaccine brand to continue the course (or else you may need to restart).
Parasite Protection
Prevents worms, ticks and fleas.
Safe products are available at vets specifically for growing puppies.
Many over-the-counter, or non-veterinary, products no longer work so it is recommended to discuss this with your vet
Be careful when buying products online, as counterfeit products can be very unsafe and even fatal. See here for more information.
Worm counts may be discussed if a tailored approach is preferred.
Microchipping (Legal Requirement)
All dogs must be microchipped by 8 weeks old.
Details must be kept up to date on a compliant database.
Socialisation for Puppies: Building Confidence
Socialisation is very important for a calm and happy pet. The key window for puppies is from 8–14 weeks where positive experiences shape future behaviour.
Introduce new people, places, gentle handling and everyday sounds.
Puppy classes are useful for social learning once vaccinations allow.
Experiences should always be positive and not overwhelming.
Veterinary teams can help with guidance if unsure.
Training, Play and Good Manners
Training from an early age is not only fun but makes your and your pet’s life so much easier and happier. Get the whole family involved! Consistency here is key!
Reward-based training strengthens the bond and builds good habits.
Safe chew toys support teething and protect household items.
Consistent routines for mealtimes, toileting and sleep help puppies feel secure.
Early advice can prevent behaviour concerns developing further.
Final Thought
A well-supported start helps puppies feel safe, happy and ready for a wonderful life with their new family.
